HOUSTON, November 1, 2012 – The Greenway Plaza electronic collection event held last month, sponsored by Crescent Real Estate Equities Limited Partnership, picked up nearly 25,000 pounds of computers, monitors, printers and miscellaneous electronics for recycling. The collection day events have been held at Greenway Plaza twice a year since 2009, and the electronics collected now total nearly 195,000 pounds or more than 95 tons of electronic equipment diverted from land fills or recycled for additional use.

Not included in the most recent recycled totals were stacks of printer toner cartridges collected. Crescent and Greenway Plaza also added cell phone collection to this year’s event. During an Earth Day celebration collection event in April, 320 cell phones were collected for the Cell Phones for Soldiers program. Nearly 50 cell phones were added during the October collection day.

AT&T sponsors the Cell Phones for Soldiers program. Proceeds are generated from the recycling of broken and dated devices, however, the charity benefits most from recent, functioning phones that can be sold for reuse. Every $5 in proceeds generated by Cell Phones for Soldiers provides about two and a half hours of free talk time to deployed and returning U.S. military troops to communicate with family and friends.

Bass Computers, Inc., a Crescent service partner supporting the project, helps with the collection, proper disposal and recycling of the electronics collected. Cartridge World, another Crescent service partner picked up the toner cartridges for recycling.
